Well, it wasn’t what I expected. Not by a long shot! It isn’t your typical ‘happily ever after’. In fact, I’m not sure I’m even happy about the whole wrap up. Don’t get me wrong, I liked it. I don’t think I loved it though. I would recommend it to other readers, young and old alike. I would put it at about a middle school reading level. (This is according to the school I teach at). This was such an interesting read…. As Old As Time, A Twisted Tale by Liz Braswell.
It is still about sacrifice and doing the right thing. It is also still about seeing below the looks of a person (or beast) and seeing their heart.
Some characters that you liked in the animated movie you may not like after reading this. Yet, the opposite is true as well. For example, the feather duster and the wardrobe left me a little put out. Yet the stove and the book seller I came to care about.
Beauty and The Beast is by far my favorite Disney fairy tale; so naturally I was excited to read this book. The first part, right up until Belle first sees the enchanted rose, is pretty much just like the movie. But when she takes the bell jar off of the flower and touches it…. that is where things deviate DRASTICALLY!
Even though I finished this book 1 week ago I am still reeling from the story line. So much so that I don’t know where to start or what to share or not share. I mean, how does one respond when NOT the whole curse is lifted? And how does one respond to the true identity of the Enchantress and Mr. D’Arque, the owner of the insane asylum? (D’Arque…looks like dark to me…. just saying. Although it is French for curve.) What about the back story of certain characters (Mrs. Potts) and the certain fact that sooner or later the animated objects will become just objects? POOR Chip, right?
This book really threw me for a loop and turned everything I’ve ever thought about Disney’s story line on its ear. With that being said, Beauty and The Beast is STILL my favorite. I still want to be Belle when I grow up and I am STILL uber excited for the live action movie on March 17!
If you’ve read this, what are your thoughts? Did you even like it?
