I love to take my kids to Disneyland. It fills my heart with so much joy that it makes me tear up. I know, its silly. I can’t help it.
But this last trip was just my husband and me. And I had just as much, if not MORE, fun and joy. We laughed and talked and adventured all over the place. It was a much needed husband and wife trip instead of a dad and mom trip.
So, since I was Disney-ing as an adult, I tried different things that I would have normally skipped should my teens have been there. A main place I insisted in NOT skipping was The Cove Bar located inside Disney’s California Adventure.
Yes, Jacob and I were there for the Super Hero Half Marathon weekend. We ran the Captain America 5K. It was amazing! I will post about that later though. Right now I want to tell you a secret. Something that I learned and took advantage of…and man, am I glad I did.
There is little, albeit beautiful, place sort of tucked in behind Ariel’s Grotto. The Cove Bar in Disney’s California Adventure Park. There is always a waiting line. You cannot make reservations; it is a first come first serve restaurant. It is open from 11 AM to when they close it down for World of Color. This is an A.M.A.Z.I.N.G. place to watch World of Color from. You are on the side of the show, but it is so up close and personal, it is spectacular. In fact, the views it has of the entire Paradise Pier are a wow factor. To watch the Mickey Wheel at night or see the lights come on in the Board Walk area…wow, just wow! You can watch the people launch on the California Screamer or even catch glimpses of your favorite princess at Ariel’s Grotto.
As with most Disney food it was amazing! The gal who took our name when we were in line highly recommended the lobster nachos. She said they were “heaven’s food.” Well, with a recommendation like that I knew had to try them.
Oh. My. Goodness. They were practically perfect in every way. So yummy! The chips were warm and fresh, the toppings were more than plentiful and the lobster was cooked to perfection! Cost: $16.00 and well worth it!
But the real reason I pushed to go there was for the cocktails and wine list. I’ve walked by many times before and have seen people with the most colorful drinks, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic, that I’ve ever noticed before. They looked like something off of a TV show or from a magazine…not something in reality. Go Disney Magic! So I talked my husband and Cassie into going there just once.
Well, we WILL be going back! It was marvelous. While in line I was asking the gal taking our names about the restaurant so I could share the information with you. And she told us something VERY NEAT AND IMPORTANT!
What is it? Do you really want to know?
Well, okay…here it is: There is a SECRET MENU! It is a secret menu of special cocktails that have GREAT names. The servers carry it in their pocket and you have to ask for it. They don’t volunteer it.
So my conversation went something like this:
“Hi, and welcome to The Cove. I’ll be your server tonight, what can I get you? Can I start you off with some drinks or appetizers?” a nicely dressed gentleman asked us.
“Yes, we are here to try your world famous lobster nachos.” I answered.
“They are a house favorite; served more than any other dish here. What about drinks?”
“We are also here for the ‘other’ menu.” I said, putting the stress on the word ‘other’. (I felt like James Bond or some other spy.)
“Ahhh, you mean this one.” It wasn’t a question. He pulled a small post-card sized menu out of his pocket. “Glad you asked for it. The top one is our biggest seller, for those who know about it.”
“Then I’ll have that one,” I replied, talking about The Color Wheel.
“I need a manlier named one.” We laughed at Jacob. “I’ll have a Black Pearl.”
“I will take a Neverland Tea,” Cassie stated.
And the server left with our order.
Other names included: Zombie, The Sea Witch, Earthquake, and Melrose Place. Each as colorful as the next.
And this is what he brought back! There were so colorful and delicious! I will never forget it!
It was fantastically fun! We sat there and ate and drank and laughed! Now I know why there is always a line for this establishment.
The next time you go to Disneyland, make sure to visit The Cove. And be sure to ask, with a low secretive voice, for the secret menu.
