It is just an old pickle jar. In fact, it still smells of dill pickles. But this jar has taken my family of 6 on amazing journeys and adventures.
It has taken my husband to Bulgaria with our church. Twice. It has taken my son once. It has taken my family to the California Redwoods and to California’s Great America amusement park. It has taken us to Puerto Penasco in Mexico. We’ve been to Universal Studios Hollywood (before The Wizarding World of Harry Potter) and Sea World San Diego because of this jar. And, of course, our favorite: Disneyland Resort!
The more they put in, the more they get out.
It is team effort where every penny counts. This includes pennies picked up from the ground, tooth fairy money, and money found riffling through the couch. This is babysitting money, pocket change, and odd jobs done for grandparents. This is all 6 of us picking up extra work; be it tutoring, cleaning basements, or scrubbing toilets. We all reap the benefits. And because it is glass, my kids can see it fill up.
Yes, the vacations are paid for by the dad and mom, mainly; but this ‘Savings Jar’ really does make our plans concrete to the younger minds. Money is such a fluid notion to them and to tell them that something costs $100 doesn’t always compute. But when it becomes visual, kids of any age, seem to grasp it more. And, boy, do they get excited about watching it fill up!
Right now, it sits on top of our refrigerator to remind us that we are saving for a Wizarding World of Harry Potter vacation. You could probably tell that by the decorations. (My 15 year old decorated the jar this time. As a matter of fact, I think she ate most of the pickles out of this jar too. LOL!)
A fancy giant jar on Amazon costs anywhere from $20 to $50. For example, this pretty jar costs $23 and comes with a colorful lid, that way it matches your kitchen or wherever you choose to display it:
A giant 1 gallon pickle jar costs around $10:
Then you also get the pickles in a dishwasher safe jar!
My jar is from Smith’s. Cost me around $7 and we ate the pickles. Really, a family savings jar can be anything that works for you and your family; as long as everyone contributes.
But whatever it ends up being, wherever you are wanting to go…DECORATE IT! It causes the excitement to spread and remain in your home.
Here are some sites to help you get the coloring party started, ENJOY!
Feel free to send us a picture of your decorated jar! I would LOVE to see it!
