I LOVE going on vacation. I adore road trips! What I love even more is coming home to a clean house. But what I love even more than that is having a clean car to start with and end with. It makes me feel calmer, more in control, more at peace with the adventure, noise, and chaos that I know will be surrounding me for the next number of days.
4 teenagers, 1 husband trying to unwind, and mom trying to hold it all together…in a mini-van that gets more mini with each passing mile. The bickering, the ‘she’s breathing my air’ arguments, the ‘are we there yets’ are only some of the joys you get when taking a road trip.
How do I combat this….I try to stay organized and have a clean surrounding.
We are planning a trip to SoCal…so my mind is already thinking about what I need to get done. And today, I met Norwex microfiber towels. Oh. My. Goodness.
This kicks my Magic Eraser’s can! No chemicals, just water. I like that.
Obviously, before taking any car on a road trip you should run some maintenance. Oil change, tire check, maybe a rotation. Clean windows, fill up the window washing fluid reservoir. Make sure you have water and maybe blanket. First aid kit. I carry a roll of toilet paper. Never can be too careful. Have your sun glasses and also an idea of where you are going…cities can be so confusing. In other words, plan your route. If it is a winter trip, take tire chains, extra water, food, blankets, a shovel, and a flare. Here is a kit that is loaded with everything you need:
But really, what I want to talk about is preparing the INSIDE of my vehicle. That is sort of MY domain as the mom. Along with the snacks and drinks, I get to be in charge of navigating too. So…we often get to see what I want to see, which is cool. I love having ‘Adventures in our (Honda) Odyssey’. I get to talk to my kids, really talk to them. That is the best part.
So back to the cleaning of the vehicles….. let me start here…on my husband’s Navigator. Leather inside, and he works in a factory that makes harvester parts. To say that the inside is filthy is an understatement. Everywhere he puts his hands, like the door knobs and steering wheel, are the yuckiest. Here are a couple before and after pictures to help you see what I see….
I used water. And a regular Norwex towel, that’s it! And VERY little elbow grease! Seriously, I was amazed! I usually have to scrub a bunch and completely use up a Magic Eraser. This was a piece of cake. But his is leather, my van is not. Here is what I started with from the van:
As usual, where people put their hands. I did not take before pictures of the arm rests or anything in the back. I figured that the two up front doors were enough to gross you out. I sent my 13 year old out to scrub, knowing that it would be done in true 13 year old fashion. (Ie. not a lot of elbow grease). Here are the results:
So, now that I’ve cleaned the gooey spots in my van, I feel much more ready for this upcoming road trip. And if I can get everyone to NOT touch anything in the van, it will be even better. LOL!
The towels I used were just the regular ones: (click on the pictures for ordering information from Amazon)
These do require special (but very easy) care:
And they have some other AMAZING cleaning items that I am currently in love with:
So, before you hit the road, try this…IT WORKS!
