We just got back from another visit to Universal Studios. This one was the best one though because the Wizarding World of Harry Potter opened in April and it was our first visit since the opening. There’s lots to come on our latest travel adventure, but one thing I did this time is make snack bags for our kids to satisfy their hunger without breaking the bank on the $5 mini-bites here and there, times six kids!
Since we are a family of 8, the meals often end up being the most expensive part of the day, so our plan normally includes eating a full hot breakfast with lots of great protein (and we stay at the Embassy Suites where we can all get a full, hot breakfast) and this means that we can stay full for pretty long. Then we allow ourselves to have one meal in the parks and then eat snacks the rest of the day.
This works perfectly and often means $7-$12 per person in food each day, a significant savings when we can curb the appetite with our own snacks. We will sometimes get additional snacks and budget and plan for the special snacks everyone wants – this time we planned Butterbeer and the big pink Lard Lad Donut. But everyone shared one donut and they got a taste of the park.
So when I bring my own snacks, I want to make it fun. I want to make it themed and park of the experience. I like to surprise my kids, but save a lot of money with the DIY/homemade tricks.
I am use to making Disney snack bags and will share those in another post, but this time I shopped for Universal Studios Themed snacks and ideas. Since there’s really only 7 main rides, it was pretty streamlined to be able to make snack bags that hit everything (except the Mummy, but there’s ideas for that too).
So here’s what I made for them:
What a fun bunch of themed snacks! Some of the snacks already came “theme labeled” and some I turned into a Universal Studios theme. I used Avery labels and went to the Avery website where they have fun themed clipart and fun labels that match the size of the labels you purchase. All of these were made with the clipart and themes on the Avery site.
Here’s the snacks already themed (I bought these items at Walmart and Kroger):
- Transformers napkins (party section)
- Krabby Patties – Theater Box Candy – 9 crabby patties per box for $1
- Minions Fruit Snacks (Kellogg’s brand and sold at both places)
- Luna Bars that I called Luna Lovegood Bars – these were $1 each and basically a meal in a snack
- SpongeBob Juice Sippers (they had a lot of Disney Characters and the only Universal Studios themed sippers were SpongeBob characters).
Then I bought the following items and made Universal Studios themed tags for them for a bit more fun and to match each attraction (excluding the Mummy):
- Beef Jerky (I bought this at Costco for $11.99) which is perfect for a protein pick-me-up
I made Jurassic Jerky Tags for these snacks to match…you guessed it…Jurassic Park.
Then I made Shrek Squeez (yes that’s the way it is spelled, drives me nuts too) for…Shrek!
I used these fruit leathers to make Edible Film Strip….General Movie Themed Snack!
- Pretzel Sticks and drinks
We are leaving out one major, MAJOR part of the park…The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. So for these themed snacks, I made Edible Wands and PolyJuice Potion!
See the ’11 and above’ reference…get it?
I then placed all of these in a quart size bag and made a Universal Studios Label (that I later wrote the kids’ names on).
I then we packed one snack bag per kid, per day. These were PERFECT and satisfying. We ended up snacking on them in the lines and on the tram ride that is about an hour long! There were 12 snack bags total (6 kids and 2 days in the park).
And we successfully stuck with our pre-planned food plan and didn’t spend anything extra on food and everyone was happy, satisfied and had fun at the same time! Food solves many a kid meltdown, and I will be continuing to make these fun snack bags whenever we visit a theme park!
