Characters: 1. the mental and moral qualities distinctive to an individual. 2. a person in a novel, play, or movie.
That is from an online search for the definition of ‘character’. Although #1 is pretty important, I want to focus on definition #2.
We just returned from Universal Studios Hollywood where were ran wild in the park for 2 complete days and spent 12 hours alone in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. It was BEYOND amazing! And thanks to the people at Getawaytoday.com for making it so affordable! (make sure to use coupon code mmom10 to save EVEN more!)
We went for Harry Potter; but what we got was SO much more! Here is my review of the famous ride: The Forbidden Journey.
But right now, I’d like to talk about the MANY MANY characters that roam around in Universal Studios. There were way more that I counted on seeing. And many that I never would have thought of seeing, so I was pleasantly surprised! And, just as in Disney, there were people there that dressed up and did cosplay as their favorite characters. And they are willing to pose for pictures too!
Now, on the people who get paid to be characters. There were so many. And every one of them willing to take pictures with you. Here are a couple that you will definitely see WHEN you go to Universal Studios Hollywood.
This is just inside the gate of Universal Studios Hollywood and right there is Woody Woodpecker! That is a blast from my past to say the least.
Doc Emmett Brown from Back to the Future. And you can sometimes find the Delorean in the Back Lot Tour.
Count Dracula. I asked him if he ever said ‘bla bla bla bla bla bla?” He got after me for being such a silly little human and believing the silly stuff we are told about vampires. He also told me he does NOT sparkle in the sunlight. Darn it!
Universal Studios Hollywood has an entire world dedicated to Gru and his Minions. “Super Silly Fun Land” is where you will have exactly that!
You can meet the Minions. Both yellow and purple. Where?, you might ask…. RIGHT IN FRONT OF GRU’S HOUSE! Make sure to take the Minion Ride ‘Despicable Me Minion Mayhem.’ You get to become a Minion!!!
When you come off the ride, you can dance with Gru! It is total dance party complete with disco ball and strobe lights. I also go to see Agnes, Edith, and Margo. I was too busy hugging Edith, my favorite, to get a picture though. *sniff, sniff. Guess I’ll have to go back!
***On a side note, when you are in Gru’s part of the park, make sure you stop by his neighbor hood. And ring ALL the door bells. You will be happy you did!
In the lower lot of the park, make sure you bump into this guy…er, Decepticon! Megatron, complete with sarcastic wit and sharp tongue makes for an interesting conversation!
And although I knocked and knocked and knocked, he never answered. He must be out somewhere solving a mystery. (Yes, I know the shadow of my finger looks like I’m picking his nose! But I wasn’t! I swear!) I was just super excited to accidentally find myself at 221B Baker Street.
I don’t know a lot about the security measures for the royal family of England. But I know that this is where that guy is suppose to be from. You can take pictures with him, but he will NOT break character. I don’t know how he does it. I wouldn’t be able to hold a straight face at some of the antics people pull. He is a Beefeater, a Royal Guard of the Tower of London.
I want to move specifically to the brand new attraction of Universal Studios Hollywood. I want to focus now on The Wizarding World of Harry Potter.
This guy. This random man out of the crowd. This ‘Arthur Weasly’ was by far my favorite! He was amazing in costume and in character performance. So many people were taking pictures of him and talking to him. And he WAS Arthur Weasly; COMPLETE WITH RUBBER DUCK! Honestly, it filled me with joy when I saw him…mainly because he was having SO much fun…but also because I would love to do that in a park. Dress up as a beloved character and DO the part for other people. What a kick that would be!
He didn’t know me and I didn’t know him. I just walked up to him, told him I was a blogger, and asked for a picture. He was more the gracious to let me take one. Super fun! What a jolly good sport! Wherever you are Mr. Weasly, I wish you nothing by good will and blessings.
There are also tons of people who are paid to be in character in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. First, there are the Beauxbatons Ladies from the Beauxbatons Academy of Magic. And there are Durmstrang Men from the Durmstrang Institute. They come out and dance for the crowd and then pose for pictures.
And, of course, the Toad Choir. Who can forget them? They rock the house with their singing and croaking and are all around impressive. They too pose for pictures when their show is over and are super fun to talk to. There is one singer from each house in the show.
There is also a conductor of the Hogwarts Express that will gladly speak in an English accent and pose for a picture with your group.
There are other characters you will see also. But these don’t talk and are only animatronic in movement. My two favorite being Buckbeak and the Monster Book of Monster. In the Owlery the owls are electronic also. Make sure to always look up when in the Owlery. It is full of owls. All shapes and sizes of owls.
And, of course, I saved the best for last. This really was a treat. It isn’t out for everybody. You have to ask. Specifically ask to be…..wait for it…..SORTED! Yes, you can be sorted. But know (spoiler alert!!!!! quit reading if you can’t handle having too much info…..) that the hat sorts in a pattern. It is not random. I knew that and put my kids in the proper order so that they were ‘sorted’ according to the shirt they were wearing. (I know, I cheated. But they were happy. And that is what is important.)
This daughter was sorted into, you guessed it, Gryffindor! She is so brave, it fits!
I will be posting about this particular attraction more indepth very soon. I will tell you where to find it and how it works. Also, WHO to ask…that is always important. So keep checking in…
Really, the entire park is amazing. Yes, there are rides that really need some love, but there are some that will just plain knock you socks off! You really should go and experience these amazing characters.
And who knows, maybe you’ll get to meet Mr. Weasly.
