Well, I finally got to see the movie. I am sorry that I waited so long… really, it was amazing! The CGI was top notch, the giants were obnoxious, and the snozzcumbers looked ever MORE GROSS (if that is even possible) than they were in the book! Seriously, when the character, Sophie, had to crawl in one, my stomach turned. It was disgusting!
But when the BFG gave the Queen of England, and her dogs, some Frobscottle, well, I laughed so hard that tears came to my eyes. Even thinking about it as I type makes me giggle. My kids, who haven’t seen it, are looking at me strange.
I really enjoyed and was enamored by the dream catching scenes. They were beautiful, almost angelic. So innocent and lovely. I can see why Sophie wanted to do that for the rest of her life. It was touching.
And some of the quotes really caught my attention:
Sophie: Dreams are so quick!
BFG: Yeah, on the outside. But they’s long on the inside.
BFG: “We is in Dream Country,” the BFG said. ‘This is where all dreams is beginning.”
BFG: I think you is barking up the wrong dog.
What a delightful movie. I give up it 2 thumbs up and recommend it for family nights, date nights, even teen nights. Super amounts of fun are just waiting!
I still remember when I first met The BFG. I was sitting in Mrs. Holme’s 4th grade class, in my desk and the wind was blowing outside the new windows. They had black trim. I wanted to have my own BFG. I would have done anything to be Sophie. I loved it!
It may have been The BFG’s giant ears that first caught my heart. My grandpa had gigantic ears and we were fishing buddies. Both Grandpa and BFG used those humongous ears to “hear absolutely every single twiddly little thing.” I’m pretty sure they both heard “all the secret whisperings of the world.”
When it came to my attention that a NEW movie, complete with CGI and amazing actors and actresses, is due to be released on July 1, I knew I had to share this information with the world. Every child should read The BFG by Roald Dahl. If you don’t have the book, click HERE to get it. It was published by Puffin Books in 1982 and has been a childhood favorite since its release . Amazon has it, in paperback for a GREAT price.
And it is out just in time for TONS of summer fun! Be it birthday, family reunions, or just gatherings of friends and/or family. Here are some amazing ideas to make your party, ANY party, into a BFG! A BIG FRIENDLY GATHERING!
First, THE FOOD:
Please, no snozzcumbers! At least not the ones that BFG has to eat.
“In this sloshflunking Giant Country, happy eats like pineapples and pigwinkles is simply not growing. Nothing is growing except for one extremely icky-poo vegetable. It is called a snozzcumber.”
How about, instead, some amazing CUCUMBER sandwiches to go along with your barbecue or potluck? Here is my favorite recipe for yummy cucumber sandwiches. They are so nice and refreshing on a hot summer day. And they are super easy!
You will need:
A loaf of your favorite bread (I chose a dark wheat bread)
2 cucumbers (sliced)
1 package of cream cheese (softened)
1/2 cup of mayonnaise
Seasonings of your choice (I like dry dill weed from my garden or dry Italian seasonings. I’ve also used garlic power, onion salt, and celery salt).
I combine the cream cheese and mayonnaise in my blender till smooth. Then I spread it my bread, liberally. I then sprinkle my seasonings on the spread out cream cheese/mayonnaise mixture. Then I layer the cucumbers on as thick as I want to. You can also layer the cucumbers with tomatoes or sprouts. Lettuce or onions work too. Apply the second piece of bread and cut into super cute shapes. Sometimes it is triangles, sometimes I break out the cookie cutters and have a good time!
And while you are making the cucumber sandwiches, you’d better have some “Frobscottle. All giants is drinking frobscottle.” A pale green soda (makes me think of Sprite) from the description that makes you “whizzpop.” Because, you know, everyone is whizzpopping. Its is a sign of happiness to The BFG.
Second, THE CRAFTS:
I know that adults love to sit and talk. But kids really like to be doing something. So I’ve rounded up some BFG craft ideas. The book itself is so full of crazy language and ideas that there are TONS to choose from. But here are a couple that would be super easy.
BFG Dream Jar- You will need a jar and glow in the dark paint. Really, any jar that has a lid will work. Any size, but please make sure it has a big enough opening to put a hand in. That will make things easier in the long run.
I really like these paints from Amazon. They glow after 15 minutes of being set in the light and are rechargeable.
All you have to do is swirl the paint on the inside of the jar. Let it dry, put the lid on and set out in the sun for 15 minutes. Your dream jar will glow well into the night.
BFG Ears- Everything you will need for this craft, I found at my local dollar store. Seriously, this one cost me less than .30 cents a person.
I started with a headband, 2 sheets of foam 5×7, my scissors, and my glue gun.
I cut out two ears from the foam and use the glue gun to adhere them to the head band. Easy Peasy! You can use a marker to contour the ears if you would like. Or use different colors for each ear. You can be really crazy here!
Or you can get them pretty reasonably from Amazon.
Third, THE GAMES:
Giant Hide and Seek- This one is fun no matter what age you are! What you will need is a small figurine or doll type toy that 12 inches short or shorter. You have one person be ‘IT’ and they hide that small item. Then the other giants have to go and find that item. The person that finds it becomes ‘IT’ and you keep playing. Just make sure the item that is being hid is Sophie sized to your giant size.
Pin The Nose or Ears on The BFG- I haven’t done this one, but I think it would sure be fun! You will need some markers, a large piece of paper, some smaller pieces of paper, some sticky tack or double sided tape, and some scissors. Draw a GIANT on the large/long piece of paper…I’m thinking butcher paper or rolled paper. But don’t put either his ears or his nose on your drawing. On the smaller pieces, draw those missing facial parts. Be creative here…think clown nose, button nose, Dumbo ears, mouse ears…etc. Then using the tape or sticky tack, have your party goes try to put the right part in the right place. Make sure to take pictures!
Amazon has a GIANT selection of GIANT games too. Great for indoor or outdoor and most have free shipping.
However you chose to celebrate this summer, make sure you go and see the movie, The BFG, in theaters on July 1st. Let me know what you think of it. I honestly CANNOT wait!
